Four nights, four family meals, four family recipes… what could go wrong?

Apparently, we’re wasting 7.2 million tonnes of food and drink every year, or to put it another way, nine Wembley Stadiums’ worth... quite the feast. 'Throwing away food guilt' has become the new 'ready meal guilt' for those who like to keep up with the Olivers, but how can you create interesting dishes for your family without leaving a glut of leftover ingredients festering in the fridge? Say, Hello Fresh.

This weekly delivery service sends boxes containing four step-by-step recipes and the fresh ingredients you need to cook them, all perfectly portioned out in cute little pots. The meat is from Tom Hixson of Smithfield, the fish James Knight of Mayfair and veg hails from Covent Garden Supply.

As a confirmed control freak when it comes to my meals, the fear of being faced with dreary dishes loomed large as I opened the box, but I needn’t have worried. I ate more exciting, varied cuisine this week than I do under my own rule. Heck, I even threw a dinner party one night. Dishes included the super child-friendly, yet adult palate-pleasing Sicilian caponata with herbed pork, street food satay skewers and mackerel kedgeree, which is now enjoying a long-overdue revival in my household. The recipe cards’ clearly photographed steps made them user-friendly for intergenerational cooking, and best of all, you can retain your newfound skills long after the last herb has been chopped.

So, a family of four can cook together and be fed in an adventurous style, with no tiresome meal planning, no traipsing around supermarkets and, of course, no food waste whatsoever.

It may be goodbye for now, but I suspect I’ll be saying Hello Fresh again, very soon.

The Hello Fresh Family Box costs £64 for a family of four. For further details, visit

I ran across your site last week and started to follow your posts consistently. I haven’t commented on any kind of blog site just yet but I was considering to start soon. It’s truly exciting to actually contribute to an article even if it’s only a blog. I really don’t know exactly what to write other than I really loved reading through a couple of of your articles. Great articles for sure. I will keep visiting your blog regularly. I learned a lot from you. Thanks! Mobile Kitchen Rental San Jose
