How your child can turn beekeeper for a sweet cause
Family bee awareness campaign launches
They may have a sting in their tail, but there’s no denying that the buzzing bumblebee is an adorable and essential member of the British ecosystem. Despite this, the results of a survey show that many children – and adults – are not aware of the issues facing our native bee population.
Only 20 per cent of children questioned claimed they had seen a wild bee, the same percentage of parents were unaware of the drop in Britain's bee population and 46 per cent of households were in the dark about the negative economic effects of bees’ decline.
The plight of Britain’s wild bees has been well documented in recent years, with numbers dwindling due to environmental factors including climate change and chemical farming methods – but now, you can help.
A newly launched Bee Awareness Campaign sees bee charity Adopt-A-hive team up with Mookie Toys and Disney’s The Hive to educate and inspire families to support Britain’s bees.
As well as a range of fun educational materials on the campaign website, Mookie has launches a range of goodies featuring the cute characters and locations from the popular animated series.
To generate more buzz for the campaign, a competition will also run online, giving away a beehive through the Adopt A Hive scheme, where recipients can benefit from a personal supply of fresh honey for a year. Pretty sweet, no?
