Trick or treat tips

How to have a scream this Hallowe’en

1. Picking a costume
When picking out an outfit for your little monsters avoid anything that will trail on the ground, cause any discomfort or restrict their movement. Masks and wigs can be irritating and itchy, and children tend to pull them off quite quickly, leaving your child with an incomplete costume, and you carrying an armload of accessories.

2. Planning a route
Make sure you plan your ghost trail in advance, staying local and trying to fit in friends and relatives' houses so you can schedule a bathroom or water break halfway through your walk.

3. Choosing ‘victims’
Stick to houses of people you know, or those who have lots of decorations in their windows, signalling they are getting into the spooky spirit. Avoid houses that have their lights switched off – they will either be out, or just trying to avoid trick or treaters!

4. Prepare a party piece
Instead of just turning up in costume and demanding gifts, ask your children to learn a few spooky jokes or songs to perform in return for their Hallowe’en treats.

5. Check the booty
Once you have completed your trick or treat route your child may be lucky enough to have a bag full of sweets or, less fortunately, monkey nuts. Inspect your child’s bag before she tucks in. It also goes without saying that you shouldn’t let her eat it all in one go – unless you want a truly frightening scene to unfold!
