Alice in Wonderland and Dalreoch tea-themed afternoon teas arrive at The Dorchester hotel, London

Afternoon tea at The Dorchester

The tradition of taking afternoon tea has been associated with The Dorchester hotel in London since it swung open its gilded doors in 1931. Served every day along the sweeping and elegant Promenade, the executive chefs have conjured up a mouth-watering selection of finger sandwiches, scones and sweet pastries that will delight afternoon tea connoisseurs. Plus, nowhere will you find more attentive service along with waiters who will take the time to chat and provide information. And they are definitely used to dealing with sticky fingers on the Promenade's seating...

However, not one to rest on its opulent laurels, this London doyen of hotels offers a grand selection of specialty afternoon teas, alongside the ever popular traditional. The Dalreoch afternoon tea is the newest addition, and adds a touch of theatre to the proceedings. You select from one of three (all delicious) Scottish grown hand-blends from the Dalreoch estate; Dalreoch White Tea, Dalreoch Smoked Tea (our favourite) and Garrocher Grey. We were offered information about each tea, and how to take it. The chosen tea is then brought to your table on a trolley and, in what looks like a chemistry set, is brewed in front of you by your server. Kids and adults alike were entranced by the scene at our table, which also attracted plenty of glances of intrigue and envy from other diners.

The Dalreoch afternoon tea at The Dorchester

The Dorchester is the only hotel in England to serve the Scottish grown tea. Additionally, nowhere else in the world is serving the Garrocher Grey – not that you need another reason to feel exclusive while dining in these spectacular surroundings.

“We now have a Secret Tea Garden on the roof of The Dorchester which will feature tea trees from the Scottish Dalreoch Tea Plantation,” says The Dalreoch Tea Plantation’s master tea grower, Thomas O’Braan, who will work alongside the hotel’s designer florist, Philip Hammond to cultivate The Dorchester’s Secret Tea Garden. Sadly, you can’t see the secret garden for yourself, but it is a pretty cool addition to one of London's most classic hotels.

The Dorchester's Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea Party

Another date for your afternoon tea diary; don’t be late for the Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea held at The Dorchester The annual Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea Party, served in The Promenade sees performances from the English National Ballet School’s young dancers, and excerpts from Alice in Wonderland played out, while you are served Wonderland-themed pastries, savoury finger sandwiches and homemade scones (because no afternoon tea is complete without a scone, or two, of course).

Sweet treats
